| The Sixth Grade Summer Assignment
2004 - 2005 The Ulla F. Muller Elementary School Students entering the sixth grade will need to read the following books before returning to school in August. Thank You, Jackie Robinson by Barbara Cohen
ï Thank You, Jackie Robinson Activity: After reading Thank You, Jackie Robinson, you are to complete the character compare/contrast worksheet provided for you. In addition, you are to write a friendly letter to Jackie Robinson. You will find that Sam lived far from Ebbets Field and didn=t tell his mom that he was going to the ballpark. Pretend that you are Sam. Instead of going to the ballpark to ask Jackie Robinson to sign the baseball, write him a one page letter. Make sure to include all parts of a friendly letter. The parts of a friendly letter are provided for you on the back of the worksheet. ï The Trouble with Tuck Activity: After reading The Trouble with Tuck, you are to write a five paragraph summary of the story. Make sure to include all important events from the story in your summary. Have your summary ready for the first day you enter sixth grade. You may add illustrations to your summary if you wish. ï Choose the book, Thank You, Jackie Robinson, or The Trouble With Tuck, which you liked the best. Make a poster or mobile advertising the book you liked best. Make sure to include the name of the book and the author. If it is a poster include a one paragraph summary of the story. If it is a mobile have at least one sentence on each hanging item. Decorate the poster or mobile in a way that would make others want to read the book. Make sure that the poster or mobile is as attractive as you can. ï Make sure to know all of your math facts when school returns. The math facts are all addition, subtraction, multiplication (from 0x0 to 10x10), and division tables. They must be committed to memory. You will be tested on them regularly, beginning the first week back in school. For your multiplication tables, make and keep flash cards using 3 by 5 note cards. Have each multiplication problem on one side with the answer on the back. Review them daily until you can get every one correct for seven straight days. Have a great summer, and return to school ready to work. The Sixth Grade Teachers
