Multimedia in Muller's Curriculum
Lesson Plan by Angela Carty         1998
Topic: Basic multiplication facts

Grade level: 3rd grade

Primary curricular area:  Math

Connected curricular areas: Language arts

Curriculum objective:
īTo find the total number of objects in a specified number of equivalent sets, using addition.
īTo  write a multiplication equation about two or more equal sets.

Time Line: 2-3 class periods.
Resources:
       Multibase Arithmetic Block-tiles (MAB)
       Overhead Projector
       Calculator
       Computer
       Cassette player and Multiplication tables
       Exploring Mathematics pp. 194, 195:  # 1-25
       Turbo Math Facts Program
       Multiplication Wipe-off books
       Enrichmeht Multiplication Sheet

Activities:
Teacher will first demonstrate the use of the MAB-tiles on the overhead by placing them in groups.  The students will then add the number of tiles to arrive at a total number (e.g. 3+3+3+3 = 12).  Next, students will state the number of sets and how many are in each  set to arrive at a total.  Students will write the equation (e.g. 4 x 3 = 12) and take turns at the overhead projector.

Students will complete all activities listed below.  Group placement will be by random selection of a numbered card.  After a fifteen minute interval, students will move to the next activity group.

īGroup I will complete assigned text pages  and check answers with a calculator.
īGroup II will use a computerized multiplication program to reinforce multiplication concepts and skills.
īGroup III will listen to a cassette tape with multiplication facts.

Assessment:   Students will receive immediate feedback through the calculator and the Turbo Math Facts program.

Enrichment:
Teacher will demonstrate how to play "Finger Multiplication" for tables six through nine.  Then two to four students will play it as a game.  Students will take turns calling out a multiplication problem and the other students will demonstrate it on their fingers.

Students will use wipe-off multiplication books to practice facts.  Students will solve problems on an enrichment multiplication sheet and color according to the instructions given.  A design will appear if the problems were solved correctly.
