10/98 |
| Topic:
Circulatory (Cardiovascular) System |
| Grade level:
Fourth |
| Primary curricular area:
Science/Health |
| Connected curricular area:
Math (Averaging); language arts. |
| Curriculum objective:
List the components of the Circulatory System and describe their function |
| Resources:
Multimedia computer; projection plate and overhead or TV; video disk player;
Adam, the Inside Story CD; Horizonís 4th grade Science book,
Horizonís 4th grade video disk and guide, bar code reader;
stopwatch; and a simple valve. Preload video disk and ìplayî
up to Main Menu. Place the Adam CD in drive and load the Adam software
(from the hard drive); click Scrapbook; select Cardiovascular System;
arrow forward to "Components of the Cardiovascular System" and click the
pause button. |
Activities:
1. With the entire group, use
Horizons video disk segment on circulation for simple explanation of
the circulation system. (Scan the Circulatory bars on page 21 video
disk Guide and hit "play".) Make a connection between circulatory
system & plumbing system in a house (pump, pipes and fluid).
2. With the full group,
use the CD, Adam, the Inside Story, to study the Circulatory System in
more detail.
*Identification
of the parts of the circulatory system, their functions, and the composition
of blood, can be viewed by clicking on the "Components
of the Cardiovascular System".
*To investigate
the clotting factor of blood, click the Blood Clotting picture.
*To investigate
the vascular system and the three types of blood vessels, click on the
Blood Flow picture. Discuss the concept of a circuit.
*To observe the
cardiac cycle and the parts of the heart, arrow forward past the
Nutrient Exchange section to the Heartbeat picture. Demonstrate the
concept of a valve.
3. Divide class into 4 groups
to read an assigned section in the text and report, using no more that
Three sentences to summarize the important information and report it to
the full group. Group 1 reads p. 414-415 and addresses
question of the function of the circulatory system. Group 2
: p. 416 on Blood. Group 3: p. 417 on parts of the heart.
Group 4: p. 420 -421 on blood vessels. All students study
the chart on page 418-419.
4. Discuss the term pulse and
how to take it. |
Assessment:
1. Assign Lesson Review p. 421
from text. Resources- text or Adam software.
2. Each person takes their pulse
according to steps A-D on p. 430 of Horizons text and describes,
in a short paragraph, the result in terms of the 3 components of the Circulatory
System. |
Enrichment/Extentions
Students will work in pairs to examine
the heart using the 3D heart animation (#1 in Navigation) and assemble
the heart puzzle (#2 in Navigation). Use pulse data to create a bar graph
in order to analyze and display data. |
Navigation guide for students:
1. Animation - From the Adam
Main Menu (close Scrapbook, if necessary) select 3D button; then heart.
2. Puzzle - From the Main Menu,
select Anatomy; from the Explore menu, select Activities; Heart puzzle. |
