Fried Johnny Cake

1 lb. flour
1 Tbs. salt
1 Tbs. sugar 
1 Tbs. butter
1/2 cup milk 
1 Tbs. crisco
2 Cups water
   Cooking oil to deep fry
2 Tbs. baking power
 Mix all dry ingredients.  Add milk and water, enough to give a stiff dough.  Kneed dough until smooth. Cover for five minutes and kneed some more. Roll in small balls, flatten with a rolling pin and stick several times with a fork or make two slashes with a knife.  Put in skillet with hot oil over a medium heat. Cook on both sides. Remove from the skillet when nicely brown (light color). Put on brown paper, or  towel to remove the excess oil. Eat and Enjoy.
