 Stewed Gooseberries

3-4 lbs. gooseberries
1 1/2 lbs sugar- white or brown
2 cinnamon sticks, broken in pieces
peel from 1 small  orange
Remove the stem from the gooseberries and put in water to soak over night.  Wash gooseberries and put into a pot. Add sugar, cinnamon and orange peel. Put on a medium fire and stir. Cook until the gooseberries  change color and the syrup is a little thick. Remove from fire and serve when cool.
